Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am proud to say Alameda voters have twice elected me to city council. I feel it is necessary that I run for Mayor because the next four years are critical for Alameda, with budget constraints, as well as determining Alameda Point’s future. Our city deserves a leader with intelligence, integrity, leadership, and budget and operations experience. A leader that does their homework, has a vision, listens to the people, doesn’t take funding (directly or indirectly) from developers, and is not afraid to make a decision. Someone you can trust who has the best interest of Alameda at heart. You can count on me to do the job!

While serving as your councilmember and Vice Mayor, I have had many accomplishments. Please explore this website for detailed information and encourage others to do so. As many of you know, Alameda has pressing issues to address that are further complicated by the national economic downturn:

  • It has been forecasted that property tax revenue will remain stagnant for the next eight years.
  • We must work together to assure that the community’s vision for the development of Alameda Point will be accomplished with minimum financial and traffic impacts.
  • The city presently has an employee benefit liability of $75 million, plus another $80 million of deferred maintenance that needs to be funded.
  • I am committed to assure the financial viability of the City’s valuable Chuck Corica Golf Course (in its present configuration, 2-18 hole regulation courses plus 1-9 hole par 3).
  • During this time we will have the opportunity to expand Alameda’s open space and shoreline trails.
  • I am actively involved and support youth and adult sports programs.
  • We must continue to recognize the value of Mastick Senior Center, an active and thriving oasis within the city.

I run a grassroots campaign. In this type of campaign it is the involvement and dedication of the people that make a campaign work. With SunCal’s NO on Measure B Initiative, the people ran a grassroots campaign against a multi-million dollar developer. We won by 85% with a mere $22,000 in campaign funds, compared to $1.3+ million spent by the developer.

I must have your dedication and involvement to win the mayoral seat. Call or email ten of your friends and neighbors today. Ask them to get involved by securing their endorsement commitment; ask them to display a lawn sign; ask them to call their friends and neighbors and do the same. Every donation counts, no matter how small. I seek your help by allowing me to use your name, and the names of every voting age member of your family for endorsement purposes. Additionally, you may support me by displaying lawn signs. You can help greatly by sharing this website at the coffee shop, meetings, luncheons, etc. to secure endorsements and lawn sign placements.

I’m counting on you! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call.

With Heartfelt Thanks,

Doug deHaan, Vice Mayor
